The modern world presents a peculiar paradox. While digital technology promises unprecedented connectivity, many men find themselves increasingly isolated. Through my experience with sports, particularly college football, I've discovered how athletic communities can bridge this gap and create authentic human connections.
Take my friendship with Steve Gray from Appspace—while we met in the corporate world, our bond was truly forged through our shared passion for college football, specifically during the historic Iowa State versus Oklahoma game featuring Brock Purdy and Jalen Hurts.

During my time at Iowa State in Sociology 101, we learned how sports serve as a crucial social institution—creating bonds, shared experiences, and collective identity. As a proud Cyclone alum and founder of Authentic Connections, I've witnessed how the spirit of #CycloneNation extends far beyond the field.
This was more than just watching a game—it represented something deeper. In an age where digital convenience often trumps real connection, we found ourselves shoulder-to-shoulder, experiencing every play and emotion together. While the workplace introduced us, sports created the environment where authentic friendship could flourish.
Building Community Beyond Sports: Three Key Insights
The Power of Shared Experience
Whether tailgating at Jack Trice Stadium or gathering at a local bar to watch a game, these moments forge authentic connections that combat our modern world's isolation.
The Need for Diverse Spaces
While sports provide a healthy framework for male bonding, we urgently need more positive, non-athletic spaces where men can build authentic connections. Community service organizations, hobby groups, and wellness circles can fill this void.
Creating Safe Spaces
The key is creating environments that embrace vulnerability, emotional support, and genuine brotherhood without requiring athletic prowess. When men have access to diverse, healthy communities, they're less likely to seek validation in spaces built on hatred and division.
